On Saturday 6th February 2016 we had the great joy of welcoming Sr. Mary Nontobeko Mabaso into the Newcastle Dominican Novitiate at Fatima Convent in Durban North. Nontobeko had spent her five months of her Pre-Novitiate in St. Albert’s Newcastle and seven months in Durban North. Nontobeko’s Mum and three siblings were present, together with her Grandfather, Grandmother and her Aunt.
Some of our Sisters travelled far for this special occasion.
Fr, Joseph Falkner O.P. presided at the Mass and two of our Dominican Brothers, Clement and Wilbrod were also present for this special occasion. Some of our Sisters had travelled far for this special occasion.
Sr. Felicity Cunningham, our Region Prioress presided at the Clothing Ceremony which took place before the Mass. She presented Nontobeko with the Dominican habit and white veil, and also with a Rosary, a Crucifix, and a Breviary. Our other novice, Sister Nondumiso Ndlovu led the singing with great gusto.
The Ceremony and the Mass were simple, beautiful and yet profound. Sister Nontobeko said a beautiful prayer thanking God for the gift of her family, and her Religious family. Fr. Joe reminded her that the Novitiate would be tough but joyful, and that her Religious Life was just beginning in one sense, and she brought many gifts from her family where her faith journey began. He also spoke of the tension we experience between prayer and ministry, and reminded us that Jesus often wished to go to a quiet place to pray, but the people got there before him ! This tension will always exist. We had a Celebratory Meal sitting in the shade of the veranda. It was a delicious meal, we had an opportunity to get to know each other better. It was a wonderful day for all.
